We ‘ran’ a successful first annual Miles for Smiles 5k event this past weekend in Fort Washington State Park. This event is one of our many fund raisers for the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry Haiti Club. We are an outreach group that travels to Haiti once a year to provide dental services to needy Haitians. Each year we are able to help over 1,000 people receive dental care. We would like to sincerely thank each one of you who either donated to or ran in our charity event. Our trips would not be possible without you. Without further ado, here is a link to the final race times of the Miles for Smiles 5K. Our participants included some serious runners and some serious walkers, the true winners are the ones that recieve our care in Haiti! Congratulations!

Stay tuned for pictures of the event and a list of our sponsors! Thanks again!

If you would like to sponsor our Temple Haiti Club Miles for Smiles 5K please contact us. Your sponsorship would include advertising on our t-shirts, on our website (for a full year) and at our race.
We are looking for donations ranging from $25.00 to $250.00 and the amount you pay would determine the size of your advertisement on our t-shirt and website. Your advertisement at our race can be as big as possible, but you cannot sell anything at the race because it is is a state park.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or for more information.

We could not do what we do without our friends from the Haiti Health Foundation. Recently there have been many riots in Haiti, creating complete chaos throughout the country. As you can imagine we have made many close friends during our travels through Haiti and and we are extremely concerned for their well-being. I would like to ask you to read the email below that we received today from the Nuns that housed us during our trip. As you can imagine, these people can benefit from anything offered, monetary or otherwise, if not a simple prayer. If anything, awareness is one step closer.
Dear Friends of The Haitian Health Foundation,This is our first emergency email.
You may have heard or read recently about the impending famine in Haiti.
The situation is also dire in Jeremie, where the Haitian Health Foundation provides for over 200,000 people. The cost of food has increased almost 100% since March 2008.A 55 pound sack of rice, a staple in the Haitian diet, has increased from $18.83 to $29.87 in just 2 weeks – a chicken that cost $3.90 last month is now $8!
Many of the 105 mountain villages under the HHF “umbrella of care” have lost their crops corn, beans, bread, fruit due to constant rains and extraordinary winds.
This is unquestionably a crisis.
HHF is responding with food in our storehouse – we have delivered truckloads of tuna in cans, peanut butter, and soy foods to the most desperate villages. Our supplies are limited and there doesn’t appear to be an end – the needs increase.
Some of these villages have nearly a 100% malnutrition rate…
Children and the elderly are eating “mud cookies” made of dirt and cooking oil to ease the constant pangs of hunger Story on MSNBC.
We are attempting to buy corn, beans and rice to make Akamil at our 3 production mills, but the costs are scandalous and prohibitive. The poor of southern Haiti need your financial help at this time.
Consider this an emergency appeal for your assistance…. Please send a check to:

Thank you so much for your support of our work in Haiti.
With appreciation,
Jerry and Marilyn Lowney
